Time: Week 13 and 2 half days in week 15, 2024

Number of students: Maximum 30

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course the students will be able to:

Comprehend ethical issues in bioethics and research ethics
Identify ethical issues within research and health care settings
Analyze and discuss such ethical problems in both oral and written communication.
Display an adequate attitude to problems within research ethics and ethics of health care and an understanding of different approaches in ethics.

The course gives an overview of ethical issues in research and health care
Special emphasise is placed on:

Research on human subjects
The development of modern research ethics
Informed consent
Ethical issues in emerging biomedical technologies
Conditions for authorship and scientific misconduct

Educational methods

Lectures and/or tutorial groups and seminars.

Examination

Each participant shall write a small paper about some topic relevant for the course. This shall be presented at a seminar. Each participant shall also be discussant of a paper written by some other participant. (Both can be done individually or in a small group).
To pass each participant shall actively participate in the teaching sessions.

Students who have failed the course or part of the course twice are entitled to request another examiner for the following examination occasion.

Admission requirements

General requirements
Admitted to education at research level (PhD-studies).

PhD students are admitted according to the following priority order:
1. PhD students registred at the Faculty of Health Sciences or PhD students strongly connected to the Faculty of Health Sciences registred at other faculties within Linköping University
2. PhD students registred at other faculties within Linköping University
3. PhD students registred at other universities

Participation in the course of other students than above is only possible if there are fewer applicants from the above groups than students to be admitted.

Grading

Pass or Fail.
