Structure and scope of your doctoral thesis

You qualify for a doctoral degree after earning 240 credits in a third-cycle subject. Your doctoral thesis for at least 120 credits must also be approved. 

Most theses at the Faculty of Health Sciences are based on two or more subprojects. A thesis is made up of the subprojects and a general narrative. You can also write a monograph thesis. All theses at Faculty of Health Science must follow the Linköping University graphic profile.

 The subject and scope of your thesis if you were admitted as of 1 July 2007

• Your thesis must include at least two subprojects, ordinarily three or four. The exact number required depends on the quality and scope of each subproject, particularly the role you have played in each of them. There is no limitation to the number of theses that a particular publication can be used in – the decisive factor is whether you have made a considerable contribution.
• At least two subprojects must have been accepted or published in peer reviewed journals with international circulation or be open access publications with peer review procedures. 
• You must be the principal author of at least one of the accepted subprojects.  
• No more than half of the subprojects to be included in your thesis may have been published/accepted prior to admission. No subproject may have been published more than five years prior to admission.
• You must have participated in all stages of the publication process. 

If you were admitted before 1 July 2007, you have the two options

• Retain your previous third-cycle subject and the associated general syllabus. You will have the same course and module requirements as before. The general syllabus and examination requirements remain – for a compilation thesis, you must have written at least four scientific articles to which you made an independent, prominent contribution. The other rules are the same as those listed above.
• Switch to the third-cycle subject of Medical Science with the associated general syllabus. Course and module requirements follow the regulations under courses and other modules for third-cycle studies at HU. Examination requirements – see “If you were admitted as of 1 July 2007.”

Degree of activity

If you were admitted as of 1 July 2007, you must have been a registered doctoral student with a degree of activity corresponding to two years at 100% no later than the semester of your public defence. If you were admitted as of 1 January 2009, you must have been a registered doctoral student with a degree of activity corresponding to three years at 100% no later than the semester of your public defence.
