IKE conducts research within a broad spectrum of modern biomedicin, from detailed molecular and cellular studies, to genetics, clinical research and epidemiology.
IKE currently hosts four strategic research areas within Systems Neurobiology, Molecular Medicine, Infection and Inflammation Research, and Cancer. These research areas obtain special support from Linköping University and Region Östergötland.
IKE currently has some 300 graduate students, out of which 100 work at the department, while 200 mainly work within the health care system (at the University Hospital in Linköping, or at other health care centra). IKE furthermore employs around 20 postdoctoral fellows and 70 technicians.
IKE has seen a dramatic expansion of research activities during the last years and a number of additional research groups joining the department. Against the backdrop of extensive retirement within the department, this means that we currently are in a very dynamic phase, with both great challenges but also great possibilities.
