Specific information

To benefit from this course, the research student needs to have a research area where patients/subjects with liver disease are studied. The course is primarily intended for research students with little or no clinical hepatological background.

The course includes basic theory on liver anatomy and liver physiology, as well as pathophysiology, treatment, and diagnosis of liver diseases. The purpose of the course is to elucidate hepatology from a clinical and scientific perspective with a focus on current and experimental diagnostic, and monitoring, modalities.

The course includes, among others, theory and lectures on:

Liver anatomy and liver physiology
Interpretation of liver enzyme levels and liver function
Common and rare chronic liver diseases focusing on metabolic-dysfunction associated steatotic liver disease (i.e, MASLD, previously known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease [NAFLD])
Ectopic fat storage syndrome
Liver cirrhosis and its complications
Possibilities and limitations with liver biopsy
Non-invasive diagnosis of hepatic fat, fibrosis, iron, and inflammation
Biochemical, non-invasive biomarkers in chronic liver diseases, focusing on MASLD

Entry requirement for studies on third-cycle education courses

second-cycle degree,
240 credits in required courses, including at least 60 second-cycle credits, or
acquisition of equivalent knowledge in some other manner

PhD students are admitted according to the following priority order:

PhD students registered at the Faculty of Health Sciences or PhD students strongly connected to the Faculty of Health Sciences registered at other faculties within Linköping University
PhD students registered at other faculties within Linköping University
PhD students registered at other universities

Participation in the course of other students than above is only possible if there are fewer applicants from the above groups than students to be admitted.

Målgrupp för kursen

Kursen är främst avsedd för doktorander utan, eller med mycket begränsad bakgrund inom hepatologi. För att kunna tillgodogöra sig denna kurs behöver den forskarstuderande ha ett forskningsprojekt inom området leversjukdomar.

Kursinnehåll

I kursen ingår grundläggande leveranatomi och -fysiologi samt patofysiologi, behandling och diagnostik av leversjukdomar. Syftet är att belysa hepatologi ur ett kliniskt och vetenskapligt perspektiv med fokus på olika aktuella och experimentella diagnostiska modaliteter.

Kursen innehåller bland annat teori inom:

Leveranatomi och -fysiologi
Tolkning av leverprover och leverfunktion
Vanliga och ovanliga kroniska leversjukdomar med fokus på icke-alkoholorsakad samt alkoholrelaterad fettleversjukdom
Ektopisk fettinlagring
Levercirros och dess konsekvenser
Möjligheter och begränsningar med leverbiopsi
Icke-invasiv diagnostik av fettinlagring, fibrosdeponering, järninlagring samt inflammation i levern
Biokemiska, icke-invasiva biomarkörer vid kroniska leversjukdom med fokus på icke-alkoholorsakad fettleversjukdom

Förkunskapskrav och antagning

Grundläggande behörighet till kurser på forskarutbildningsnivå har den som har

avlagt en examen på avancerad nivå,
fullgjort kursfordringar om minst 240 högskolepoäng (hp), varav minst 60 hp på avancerad nivå, eller
på något annat sätt förvärvat motsvarande kunskaper.

Följande prioriteringsordning tillämpas:

Antagna forskarstuderande vid Medicinska fakulteten eller forskarstuderande antagna vid fakultetsövergripande forskarskola inom LiU.
