Course description

Since its discovery in 2012, the so-called “CRISPR-Cas9 revolution” has completely transformed the ability to manipulate the DNA of living organisms. This is true not only for basic research, but also for many practical applications, including gene therapy in translational medicine and gene drives in efforts to control pests and disease vector species.

This course will first cover the main discoveries that led to the understanding of the CRISPR/Cas molecular mechanisms and the awarding of the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry to Jennifer Doudna and Emmanuelle Charpentier. Then, it will present the most relevant new techniques based on the same principle, starting with precise genome editing, knock-in of specific mutations, the on-going clinical applications and their sustainability, and continuing with genetic screenings, transcription regulation, epigenetic modifications and DNA/RNA visualization, and their application in basic research.

The students will be challenged in developing and discussing CRISPR/Cas applications related to their own research as well as research conducted by their peers.

Educational methods

The course will consist of instructor-led lectures and student-led seminars. The lectures will focus on the fundamentals of the CRISPR/Cas toolbox, while the seminars will explore its application on students’ new planned research.

Entry requirements and Admission

Entry requirement for studies on third-cycle education courses

  • second-cycle degree,
  • 240 credits in required courses, including at least 60 second-cycle credits, or
  • acquisition of equivalent knowledge in some other manner

For this course previous education on genetics and/or molecular genetics equivalent to 6 credits is required. You will be asked to describe your previous education in the application form.


PhD students are admitted according to the following priority order:
1. PhD students registred at the Faculty of Health Sciences or PhD students strongly connected to the Faculty of Health Sciences registred at other faculties within Linköping University
2. PhD students registred at other faculties within Linköping University
3. PhD students registred at other universities
