Rigid Body Dynamics

Course literature: V.I. Arnold Mathematical Methods of Classical Mechanics, Ch. 6 Rigid Body and necessary moments from the preceding chapters. L.D. Landau, E.M. Lifshitz Mechanics, Ch. 6 Motion of a Rigid Body.

Course contents: Kinematics and concept of angular velocity. Inertia tensor, angular momentum. Equations of motion for a rigid body in the Lagrange form and in the Newton form. Motion w.r.t. a moving reference frame, inertial forces and Coriolis force. Eulerian angles. Euler Equations. Equations for a free triaxial top, fast top and heavy symmetric top. Fixed and gliding boundary conditions. Rigid bodies in contact. Solving problems on rigid body dynamics in Ch. 6 of L.D. Landau, E.M. Lifshitz book Mechanics.

Organisation: Home reading and discussion with examinator, solving problems from the book, presentation at a seminar, project work.

Examination: Solving problems from the book, presentation at a seminar, written presentation of a project work.

Prerequisites: Undergraduate education in mathematics.
