BrandVisors, a new bridge between students and companies

Finding the right job and the right student is not always easy. LiU students have set up BrandVisors, an association with the aim of facilitating contacts between students and companies.

Patrik Jutterström at a student café“We want it to be normal for companies to establish contact with students.  The idea arose back in the summer of 2013 and we have put a lot of time into planning it. The association took shape in the end of December, and we received a grant that came jointly from Saab and LinTek, enabling us to start work.

Patrik Jutterström, 27, is in his fifth year on the IT programme and talks enthusiastically about BrandVisors, which he started together with Jesper Wåhlstedt.

BrandVisors is an association whose aim is to bring companies and students into contact with each other at Linköping University by providing advice, mostly to the companies. Just now the focus is local – in Östergötland – but in the future they hope to be able to expand.

“Östergötland precisely, because it is easier to get that personal contact with the companies.”

For the moment there are five members in the association, four of whom sit on the board. They are all studying at the Faculty of Science and Engineering and to begin with they are targeting students in technical and engineering courses. But going forward the association also wants to work with different programmes in the medical and the arts and sciences faculties.

The various student sections are doing a great job, Mr Jutterström thinks, but things can always get better. One way to help the small and medium-sized companies find a way into the university is to let them know which student societies there are and how companies should go about reaching students at the university.

“Our main focus is to give companies tips and advice on how they should go about finding the right students. One of the ways in which we are looking at doing this is to offer the student societies training held by the companies, and we have now established what training the different student societies are after. It is a bit of a win-win situation in that the student societies can develop with the benefit of skills support from the companies and in their turn the companies get to meet committed and energetic students,” Mr Jutterström says.

Of course it is just as difficult for the companies to find students with the right qualifications as it is for students to find the jobs that are right for them.

What has been the most enjoyable thing about working with the new association?
“All the positive responses from both the companies and the student sections. We are noticing that there is an expectation on how the association is going to develop.”

“On the other hand it is unfortunate that it has taken such a long time to get started,” says Mr Jutterström.

He has high expectations for the association, where one idea is that in the future they can be paid by the companies.

“The need is there and the companies have said that we should be paid for our help.”

BrandVisors also hope that they will be able to increase the motivation of the students to study. Contact with the companies can give students concrete ideas about their future and something to look forward to.
