LiU supports Earth Hour

LiU is participating in Earth Hour on Saturday 28 March between 20.30 and 21.30. This is a global manifestation to show public support for action against global warming.

LiU has put climate and the environment high on the research agenda for 2009-2012 and Earth Hour is a natural part of this.

Anders Carlsson, Environmental Issues Coordinator at LiU, says “We ask all employees to switch off all electronic equipment and ensure all lights are switched off this weekend to mark the occasion. This will send the message to politicians that further action is expected and far-reaching international agreements need to be reached in the Copenhagen negotiations in December 2009.”

Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour. In 2008 this had grown into a global movement with landmarks such as San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge, Rome’s Coliseum and Sydney Opera House switching off their lights. This year the goal is for 1 billion people to switch off their lights as part of a global vote. For more information please see www.earthhour.org
