Lars Hultman in European Scientific Elite
Lars Hultman, Professor and Head of the Thin Film Physics Division at Linköping University, is one of seven Swedish scientists in the upper echelons of European research. His scientific stature was recently recognized through a research grant of MSEK 20.
The European Research Council, a funding body set up to stimulate scientific excellence, has for the first time awarded Advanced Grants. The research category for the natural sciences and engineering science attracted 997 applications of which only 105 were approved.
"I am of course, delighted," says Lars Hultman. "This is one of the finest recognitions of scientific merit that a European researcher can receive."
The money will be used for research on self-organizing nanostructured thin film materials.
Other Swedish researchers who received individual ERC advanced grants include three scientists from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm, Axel Brandenburg, Johan Håstad, and Bjorn Ottersten; Anne L'Huillier and Villy Sundström, both active at Lund University; and Bengt Nordén whose academic base is Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg.
ERC Advanced Grants are also awarded in the fields of social science/humanities and the life sciences. Announcements for these fields are forthcoming.
