Generous private donation for research on Parkinson's
A private donation of MSEK 10 was recently presented to Linköping University. The funds are earmarked for research on Parkinson's disease.
"We are extremely grateful to our anonymous benefactor for this generous gift. LiU has research teams in several disciplines that focus on aspects related to Parkinson's. This donation makes it possible for them to continue their search for the background factors of the disease and to seek improved methods for easing its effects," announced Mille Millnert, President and Rector of Linköping University.
Parkinson's disease is a disorder of the central nervous system due to degeneration of those neurons which normally produce dopamine. It manifests itself in movement disorders such as tremors, muscle rigidity and a slowing of physical movement. In Sweden, around 20 000 people are affected.
The LiU research teams have a focus ranging from basic research on a molecular level, to development and evaluation of new forms of therapy.
