LiU is again chosen to host a Center of Excellence

Once more, the excellence of LiU and its eminent researchers is recognized. Another C of E setting has got a green light.

Professor Carl-Ulrik Schierup, formerly at the defunct National Institute for Working Life (ALI) and now on the staff of LiUs Department of Social and Welfare Studies was chosen from among 25 candidates by the Swedish Council for Working Life and Social Research for cornerstone funding of a FAS Center. The grant is MSEK 50 (55 million euro).

The new center will focus on migration issues and their impact on the economy and society-at-large. FAS financing will be spread out over a ten-year period with grants of five million annually.

"It is particularly gratifying that the importance of these issues is recognized, not least in the light of the government's dismantling of the Institute for Working Life (ALI) in Norrköping. Our application describes a joint project between LiU and ALI where ALI would have been a major financer and we anticipated that around twenty researchers would be involved. It will be necessary to rethink our budget in light of the new circumstances," says Carl-Ulrik Schierup in an official statement.

"That notwithstanding, it is of course immensely encouraging that we have been entrusted to set up a Center of Excellence to deal with research on these topical issues. I had steeled myself for a worst case scenario, though our application was clear-cut and well-motivated."
