Two senior faculty from LiU will come to share their thoughts and experiences with organizing your academic research.

Mikael Benson is a professor of systems biology at the medical faculty, and will talk about the challenges of managing research projects with many collaborators, how to identify and finish failing projects and how to prioritize your valuable time.

Jonas Löwgren is a professor of interaction and information design and will share his experiences and advice on how to balance your research with other strategic challenges that are important to your career progression.

“VR Grants: enhancing impact potential and domain-oriented insights”

He will talk about background and expectations in grant design and will focus on VR general best practices and considerations. 

Afterwards, separate domain meetings will take place with the responsibility of Vanya Darakchieva (PE, physics and engineerin), Daniel Västfjäldt (social sciences & humanities) and Jan-Ingvar Jönsson (LS, life-sciences). “Maximizing the impact of research: inside views from a former Nature-editor”

Dan Csontos from ElevateScientific will present how to make a high-impact with your research by explaining how to get publish in Nature for example. Questions that will be addressed are: how to communicate with reviewers, what is the role of the cover letter, why is the context important, or how are decisions taken. He will also give tips and advices for writing for the readers.

All members are invited to take part in the Reference Group meeting where we will discussion the results of the semester and plans for the next one. This meeting is also a good opportunity to inform us of concerns and problems that junior researchers are facing and that should be addressed by Junior Faculty.

LiU Junior Faculty Career Day 2013: How to be Successful Scientist

This year the LiU Junior Faculty Career Day focuses on topics for building a career as an independent researcher. The situation of junior researchers at Linköping University and in Sweden will be addressed as well as important topics as the independence research line, collaboration between researchers and communication and commercialization of research results. During the Career Day, the prize winner of the Junior Faculty prize will be presented.

How to become a docent?

The aim of this seminar is to provide our members with information on the requirements for getting a docentship, to clarify the procedure and reveal any obstacles on the way. For this seminar the “docenturnämnder” from each faculty at Linköping University are invited to provide the necessary information. At the end of the seminar there will be the possibility to discuss this topic with “fresh” docents.

National Meeting of Junior Faculty/Future Faculty Organization

This year Linköping University is the host of the national meeting of Junior/Future Faculty (JF/FF) organizations of Swedish Universities. The national meeting takes place every year where the representatives of the JF/FF organizations meet to discuss problems and issues that junior researchers are facing, to find out solutions and to develop a common strategy or necessary actions of JF/FF.

The meeting will be on Thursday and Friday. On Thursday, the representatives of JF/FF will present the institutions and challenges/issues, but also discuss which problems we have in common and how to solve them. Representatives of Vetenskapsrådet (Ämnesrådet av medecin och hälsa) are going to visit the universities this fall, and they ask for a meeting with representatives of junior researcher. We will discuss the position of JF/FF at the meeting. On Friday, we have invited members from the Young Academy of Sweden (Sveriges Unga Akademi) to join the national meeting. We will discuss how our organizations can collaborate with each other.

Commercialize your research

Junior Faculty of Linköping University invites you to the club meeting devoted to the commercialization of your research. The idea is to show to young researchers (postdocs, FoAss etc) the possibility and the way to commercialize their research, which support we can receive, which opportunities/programs exist, and how can we benefit from them. Two speakers will present two different programs: Johan Ahlström will tell about Mentor For Research program from IVA: participate in the program, get a mentor and expand your business oriented vision. Åsa Wallin will present the possibilities for young researchers that exist at Innovationskontoret (Research to Business program etc).Do not miss the chances to get the right information in a right time!

Stress and conflict situations at the work place

Karin Löfstrand from FeelGood is invited and she will give a presentation on "Stress and conflict situations at the work place". The intention of the seminar is to provide an open forum to discuss these topics. Questions that will be addressed are: What is stress? What are the risk factors for stress at work? What are typical reactions? and How can someone handle stress?

Since their will be time for discussion and to get the best outcome for yourself, it is recommended to reflect what at the working place does affect you, your health and your effectivity positively and negatively.

This time we have invited Prof. Anthony Turner from Linköping University and Editor-in-Chief of Biosensors & Bioelectronics and David Lawrence from the University library. David Lawrence will speak on copyright and plagiarism. On the topic of authorship Prof. Anthony Turner will will share his experience as an Editor as well as discuss conflicts that may occur for young researchers when it comes to authorship, but he will also give information on the topic of authorship for the special case of patents.

A full day on the topic of career options for junior researchers, both in academia and in industry. The afternoon offers a seminar on the double role as a teaching researcher and a researching teacher and a grand finale: a very interesting seminar on academic leadership by University Chancellor Lars Haikola. Governance and policy: the role of foresight and adaptive strategies in grantmanship

Bohdan Sklepovych, strategic communicator at LiU, discusses strategies in project design in light of funding opportunities.

In the face of globalization and increased competition, as well current governance concerns shifting to broader issues regarding societal and sustainable needs, successful project development requires greater focus and balance in terms of contextual consideration. Bohdan plans on highlighting strategies helpful in project design and in aligning research needs and grantsmanship in light of funding opportunities, and concerns surrounding joint programming and the future of grand challenges.

Junior researchers presented recent work and disussed possibilities for future collaborations with other junior researchers within existing and plausible upcoming projects. 

 

November 26

Career day 

Presentations and exhibitions for Junior Researchers on career opportunities within and outside the academic world. The first annual Junior Faculty Prize for sustainable research environments were awarded professor Björn-Ola Linnér.

 

September 24

The importance of pedagogical merits for positions in academia 

The prerequisites for tenure positions at LiU were discussed with Randi Hellgren (PA) and Ellinor Edwardsson-Stiwne (CUL).

 

February 26 and March 12
Grant Workshop 

Junior researchers were allowed to bring their preliminary research proposals to senior evaluators for help to make better grant applications. The first day, February 26, there were presentations from reviewers in different scientific boards as well as information from Grants Office. Then a initial group discussion took place about the grant applications. The second day, March 12, further discussions were made within the groups and a final presentation by Per Dannetun, Grants Office.

 

January 29

Media training workshop 

Björn Carlgren, media trainer and journalist, trained several junior researchers to be better in approaching media. Two important lessons were to be prepared beforehand when meeting journalists and to be able to summarise the findings in just 1 minute and 30 seconds.

Hur kan du hantera härskartekniker utan att betraktas som offer eller angripare?

Hur undviker du att själv omedvetet använda härskartekniker?

Seminariet uppmärksammar det subtila i härskarsituationer och föreslår hur dessa kan hanteras. Den belyser också hur olika kvinnors och mäns metoder kan vara. Men en sak är gemensam: de tar den fula vägen till makt.
