Swedish for university employees


The language policy of Linköping University sets aims for the level of Swedish required from its employees. Hence, our course programme is designed to comply with these standards.

We offer courses at the levels A1/A2, B1, B2 and C1. Depending on the number of participants the teaching format varies from individual or small group tutoring to a regular course format.  

Please sign up as soon as possible and no later than the following deadlines:

Spring semester courses: January 15th for the regular spring semester Courses and December 10th for the intensive courses in JAnuary.

Autumn semester courses: August 18th for the regular autumn semester courses and June 16th for the intensive courses in August. 



Level A1 - A2

Preliminary course time:

Spring semester: week 7-21, Autumn semester: week 37-51:

Mondays at 9:15 to 15:00.


There is also a possibility to participate in the intensive language courses for students in August or January at A1 or A2 level. 


IntensivE COURSE AT LEVEL A1 OR A2 iN JANUARY / AUGUST (with Exchange and master's students)

Course time: week 2-5 (spring); 32-35 (autumn)

Schedule: TBA


Level B1

Course time: week 7-21 (spring); 37-51 (autumn)

Preliminary schedule: Mondays 9:15-15:00


Level B2 (if enough applicants)

Course time: week 7-21 (spring); 37-51 (autumn)

Preliminary Schedule: Mondays and Tuesdays 9:15-12:00.


Level C1 (if enough applicants)

Course start: week 7 (spring); 37  (autumn) 

Schedule: TBA

Individual or group tutoring


General information

About 10 - 12 participants per group. The number of participants is limited. Applications will be considered in the order they are received. Level placement will be based on the self-estimates of the participants. If you are uncertain of your level please contact us for consultation or a level placement test. In case of a lower number of participants we will try to offer individual or small group tutoring.

Cost: 18.500 SEK per participant for a full course module (A1/A2 or B1 or B2). For the course A1 or A2 only: 10.000 SEK.

Content: The course programme aims at gradually developing versatile language skills in accordance with the language policy of Linköping University.

Please give us a self estimate of your previous knowledge of Swedish. If you are not an absolute beginner, please try to describe your language level according to the common reference levels of the European Commission, ranging from A1 to C2 (please see description below this text).

Can understand with ease virtually everything heard or read. Can summarise information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation. Can express him/herself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in more complex situations.



Can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognise implicit meaning. Can express him/herself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. Can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. Can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.





Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialisation. Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.



Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. Can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken. Can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest. Can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes & ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.






Can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment). Can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters. Can describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.



Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type. Can introduce him/herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has. Can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.
