Poster presentation Workshop

Monday 12 June from 9:30 to 12 o'clock. It will be located in the seminar room Brahe, E328, in the Physics Building at Campus Valla.
What makes poster presentations effective? How can you boost the impact of your poster?
The Communication Officer at IFM, Filip Wiltgren, will give us a workshop on what to think of as you make a poster. The seminar focuses on a series of tips on how to use simple design and layout paradigms to make your poster be noticed, remembered, and effectively support your research goals. Knowing these paradigms will also make creating your poster faster and easier. We'll take a quick look at the practicalities, the tools and methods to use when creating your poster, and dip into copyright law about what resources you may and may not use in your poster. We'll also analyze and give feedback on participants' posters. If you would like to volunteer your poster for feedback, please send a copy of your file to filip.wiltgren@liu.se

G protein coupled receptors, phosphoinositide lipids, and ion channels control membrane excitability

Research presentation by Professor Bertil Hille
Wednesday 24 May, at 15:00, Lecture hall Eken, Campus US. Host: Fredrik Elinder
Bertil Hille helped establish the concept of ion channels as membrane proteins forming gated aqueous pores. He showed that Na+and K+channels of axons can be distinguished by drugs such as tetrodotoxinand tetraethylammoniumion, and that their ionic selectivity can be understood by a limiting pore size, the selectivity filter, and by movements of ions through a series of saturable sites. He showed that local anesthetics enter Na+channels in a state-dependent manner. In later studies of modulation of ion channels by G protein–coupled receptors he distinguished two new signaling pathways. A fast, pertussis toxin-sensitive pathway turned on inward rectifier K+channels and turned off Ca2+channels by G protein Gβγ subunits. A slow, pertussis toxin-insensitive pathway turned off some K+and Ca2+channels by depleting the plasma membrane phosphoinositide PIP2. Hille wrote the widely used textbook “Ion Channels of Excitable Membranes”. In 1999 he received the Lasker award together with Clay Armstrong and Rod MacKinnon.

Life on Chips - Towards microfluidic-based human disease models

Danny van Noort, Biotechnology, IFM, Linköping University
Thursday 27 April at 15:15 (until 16 o'clock) in Linden, entrance 65, Campus US.
Cell cultures on microfluidic chips are a step forward in cell based biological studies, as the amount of reagents reduced while the control over the microenvironment increases.  In this manner, cells can be located in specific places, 3D cell constructs can be fabricated that will have a more reliable mimicry of in vivo models while embryos and highly motile cells, such as ciliates, can be localized for optical interrogation.  These systems can be readily used for drug screening or to study single cell behaviour. By coupling together two chips, interactions between two different cell types can be studied.  Here, I will look at the impact of glucose concentration on the levels of secretion of intestinal L-cells and pancreatic β-cells, and as such, the effect of L-cells on insulin secretion from the β-cells.

Soft and stretchable bioelectronics k

Klas Tybrandt, Laboratory of Organic Electronics, ITN, LiU
Wednesday the 25th of January in Jordan-Fermi, Physics Building, Campus Valla, starting at 11:15.
Soft and stretchable electronic devices are attractive for biomedical applications, where the matching of the mechanical properties of the interfaced tissue is essential. To date a variety of applications have been explored, ranging from electronic skins, in vivo temperature sensors to multi electrode arrays for stimulation and recording. Although significant progress has been made in recent years, surprisingly little effort has been devoted into the development of inert stretchable composites with long-term stability. Here I will present my work on the development of such composites, related fabrication processes and applications.

Reminder "Scientific Writing and Publishing with Impact"

You are invited to a one-day workshop on how to write and publish impactful scientific papers.
Making an impact with your research and influencing your target audiences requires careful planning of both the writing and publication processes. This planning ensures that your papers are not only read, but also understood and found meaningful and influential by the readers – considerations that are particularly important if you wish to be published in the world’s top journals.
The workshop is led by Dr Ninad Bondre, Managing Editor at Elevate Scientific, and formerly an editor at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and Nature Geoscience.
Date: 20 January 2017, starting at 8:30 and ending at 17:00

"Scientific Writing and Publishing with Impact"

PhD course on Coagulation

Week 10, 2016, Sofia Ramström and Tomas Lindahl will give a course on the basics on coagulation.
It will give a foundation for all who need to know how haemostasis works for their work. The goal is to start each pass without assuming any prior knowledge, so that it could be interesting for people whose materials or devices are likely to end up in a human body, and then do know what can happen and why ...
If there are any special interests, it is possible to add them!
The course can be of value to those interested in biomaterials and biocompatibility as well.
Very preliminary programme can be found at https://people.ifm.liu.se/stekl/forum/coagprel.pdf
Please send your comments and suggestions to sofia.ramstrom@liu.se

"Soft-matter and self-assembly"

during the spring-semester 2015. The exact date the course will start is not settled yet, but a likely time is in March.  I would, however, first like to estimate the number of interested students and their background. The topic will be soft matter and self-assembly. We will discuss how organic molecules/polymers assemble into larger structures and how one can understand the forces holding the resulting structures together. I will decide the detailed content of the course when I know the background of the students interested in taking the course. If you are interested in the course, please reply to me nicso@ifm.liu.se

Forum Forum

an event open for all interested
Arranged by Forum Scientium in collaboration with the Junior Faculty
The 11th of February 2015, 15:15 ~ 18:30
Lecture hall Planck, The Physics Building, Campus Valla

Forum Forum is an informal get-together event where ideas about future collaboration projects can be born. By talking to Ph.D. students and junior/senior researchers, and by listening to the visions of other research groups, we (Forum Scientium and Junior Faculty) hope that the attendants will find inspiration and opportunities to start up joint multidisciplinary research projects. Previous Forum Forum sessions have led to successful collaborations.

A range of speakers will present their research and the visions of their group shortly and present suggestions for possible projects for cross-disciplinary collaborations. This will be followed by round-table discussions in smaller groups.
