Welcome to ELLIIT

ELLIIT is a strategic research environment funded by the Swedish government in 2010, as part of its initiative to support strong research in information technology and mobile communications.  ELLIIT has four partners: Linköping University, Lund University, Halmstad University and Blekinge Institute of Technology.   ELLIIT constitutes a platform for both fundamental and applied research, and for cross-fertilization between disciplines and between academic researchers and industry experts. ELLIIT stands out by the quality and visibility of its publications, and its ability to attract and retain top talented researchers, and aims at being recognized as a top international research organization.

ELLIIT achieves its goals by a judicious choice of funded focus projects, a structured process for international recruitment, a balanced way of stimulating cooperation between research areas and between the sites involved (LiU, LU, BTH, HH), and a proactive approach towards fostering and maintaining cooperation with Swedish industry. The overarching objective of ELLIIT is to support scientific excellence in combination with industrial relevance and impact.

Call for Expression of Interest: Infrastructure Support

Infrastructure has been identified as a critical part for further development of the research activities within ELLIIT, and the ELLIIT management is therefore investigating the needs for infrastructure support in our research environment. In order to get a broad view for further strategic discussions within the steering group and program management group, we hereby invite researchers from the ELLIIT environment to suggest infrastructure support initiatives. More information is provided in this document

Questions can be directed to the ELLIIT Director Erik G. Larsson, Co-Director Fredrik Tufvesson or PMG Chairperson Inger Erlander Klein. There will also be time for discussions on this topic at the upcoming ELLIIT Online Workshop, 15 April.

On January 25, 2021, the ELLIIT program management group decided to fund 9 new projects, at the level of 2 MSEK/year (1 MSEK/yr/partner) during 2021-2025. The call ("Call C", launched October 19) received 44 proposals in total, and was very competitive. Step 2 of the evaluation also involved a review by external experts. More info about the funded projects can be found here.

ELLIIT Online Workshop 15 April 2021

A short online version of the ELLIIT workshop will be held on 15 April, at 13-15. More details can be found hereThe full ELLIIT annual workshop is currently planned for October, 2021 in Lund.

ELLIIT Gender Call December 2020

Sara Maad Sasane and Carina Geldhauser from  Matematikcentrum, LU, have been awarded 100,000 kr for the project "Kvinnor och Matematik". The project aims  to re-establish ”kvinnor och matematik”, the Sweden-wide network of women mathematicians in Sweden. The mission of the network will be to support women in their careers, to encourage women to study mathematics, to give women mathematicians in Sweden more visibility, to provide a meeting place for like-minded people and to share information and statistics about the situation of women mathematicians in Sweden.

ELLIIT Results from Call C, Step 1

Call C step 1 was launched October 19 and closed November 12. A total of 90 applicants submitted 44 project proposals. Invitations to step 2 were sent on November 25, to 43 applicants who together submitted a total of 21 proposals. A list of the proposals invited to step 2 can be found here.

Step 2 of this call will close on December, 17, and review of the proposals will be done in January-February 2021 by external experts and ELLIIT management. Final financing decision can be expected in the beginning of March.

ELLIIT Gender call

The ELLIIT PMG has decided to award 100,000 kr to Sandra Pott, Maad Sasane and Carina Geldhauser from Matematikcentrum at Lund University. Their project, "Building a community", adds a mentoring program to the already very successful lecturing series "Women in mathematics".

ELLIIT New call for projects (Call C)

The ELLIIT steering committee decided in its meeting on September 30, 2020, to allocate up to 20 MSEK per year during five years for new Ph.D. student projects to commence in the spring of 2021. Against this background, ELLIIT invites researchers from the participating organizations (LiU, LU, BTH and HH) to submit proposals for new projects. More information about this call can be found on the ELLIIT Call portal.

ELLIIT PMG decision for new Ph.D.-projects (Call B)

On September 30, 2020, the ELLIIT Steering Group decided to fund 14 new projects. Brief information regarding the projects is available in this pdf-file

ELLIIT Annual Workshop in Lund 21-22 October, 2020 Postponed to 2021

ELLIIT annual workshop, 21-22 October, 2020 is postponed.

ELLIIT board decision for pre-projects

ELLIIT board has decided which projects that are accepted for funding. Here you can find information about approved projects.

ELLIIT board invites proposals for pre-projects

In the 2020 national budget bill for University Research and Education, an additional 72 MSEK/year were allocated to the strategic research area in IT and mobile communications. Against this background, the ELLIIT board invites proposals for pre-projects that explore new directions within the scope of the ELLIIT Technology Foresight 2030.

To be competitive, projects must initiate new activities. Proposals for continuation of existing activities will not be considered. The recommended instrument is postdoc positions, but there is no strict constraint on the use of funding. Projects may start any time after funding decisions are made, but no later than January 2021. Awarding the projects is contingent on final budget decisions by the LiU administration.

Deadline: February 21, 2020.

For more detail, see the attached call for proposals.

Workshop on Fog Computing and the Internet of Things (Fog-IoT 2019), co-located with CPS-IoT Week 2019

When cyber-physical systems become interconnected with each other and with the Internet, they are called the Internet of Things (IoT), forming "the infrastructure of the information society". Fog Computing is a "system-level architecture that distributes resources and services of computing, storage, control and net-working anywhere along the continuum from Cloud to Things" and is about to tremendously impact the IoT.

The Fog-IoT 2019 workshop will be co-located with CPS-IoT Week 2019, taking place in Montreal, Canada, April 15-18, 2019. The workshop itself takes place on April 15th.

Photon Mapping using Historygrams

Medical modalities such as CT scanners are generating increasingly large data. In just a few seconds thousands photonmappingof 2D slices can be extracted and be put together to a volume of data representing the human body. Researchers in ELLIIT have developed new methods for ultra realistic volume rendering of this data. The illumination of the data is based on tracing of virtual photons that are allowed to scatter in the participating volumetric media. This generates images with realistic light conditions such as shadows and gloss. The computational complexity of tracing photons is reduced by using novel data representations which take into account which photons that are affected by changes of visualization parameters and "remembers" the path of the photons. We have named these data structures "Historygrams" and for the first time we can achieve interactive interaction with ultra realistic volume rendered images. The work will be presented at the upcoming IEEE Visualization conference in Seattle in October 2012.
